Flat-foot vs bolted rack
If you may not bolt the floor, buy a flat-foot rack. Bolt a rack down only when the floor allows it. This choice comes after a power stand, not before the dumbbells.
If you already have adjustable dumbbells, floor mats, and a doorway or wall pull-up bar, do not start with a rack. The next buy is a power stand. Put mats down before you set a stand or a rack in place. This page is the floor decision for the later rack.
This is the decision for a typical one-car garage or spare room. It is not a commercial gym. Named examples: Titan Fitness X-3 Series Flat Foot Power Rack, Titan Fitness T-3 Series Power Rack, and REP Fitness PR-1100. Specs belong on the racks page and on the current listing.
The stance
Flat-foot first, once you have decided a stand is not enough. A flat-foot rack stands on a wide base. You do not drill. You can move it. You give up floor around the feet. That is the right trade if you rent, if the floor is finished, or if you are not sure you can put anchors into the slab.
A bolted rack uses a smaller base. Titan's T-3 is sold as a bolt-down rack, and Titan recommends bolting it for added stability. Buy that style only if you can put anchors into concrete or into a platform you are willing to drill. Do not buy it and leave it unbolted.
How to choose
- Ask if a power stand still covers squats, presses, and pull-ups. If yes, do not buy a rack yet.
- Ask if you can put holes in the floor. If the answer is no, or not yet, flat-foot.
- Measure ceiling height and the door. Then read the listed rack height, not a photo.
- Check whether safeties are in the box. On the Titan X-3 and T-3 pages checked for this guide, pin-and-pipe safeties are accessories.
- If the room is tight and the load is lighter, the PR-1100 is a no-bolt rack you cannot bolt later. REP includes pin-pipe safeties on that model. It is not the default if you want a heavier rackable capacity.
What this guide does not decide
It does not pick a color, a lat attachment, or a price. Those change by listing. Check the current listing.
