FitRx SmartBell recalls

There are two FitRx SmartBell recalls, not one. They cover different models, different weight ranges, and different serial numbers. If you own a FitRx pair, check which one applies before you do anything else.
This site’s owned setup includes a FitRx SmartBell XL pair, covered by the 2025 recall. One of the two has been through the remedy. This page is an owner’s account. It is not legal advice and it is not a safety test.

Both notices describe the same hazard. Neither is a statement about every FitRx dumbbell.
How to check yours
The model and serial are printed on the side of the storage tray, not on the handle. Read them off the tray and compare against the rows above.
Two things worth knowing before you panic or relax.
Reported incidents cover well under one percent of units in the recalled range. Roughly 60 reports across about 12,400 XL units is under one percent. If yours has been fine, that is the ordinary experience. It is not evidence that yours sits outside the range.
The failure described on the notice is sudden, not gradual. Plates release during a rep. There is no loosening phase to watch for, so “it has been fine so far” is not a reading you can take.
What the remedy actually is
On the XL notice, the remedy is a free repair. Tzumi sends a new handle and a new storage tray.
As this owner understands it, the remedy is a matched handle and tray: Tzumi asks owners to dispose of both recalled parts, and the replacement arrives as a set. On the unit received here, the new handle was not kept in service with the old tray. The CPSC notice does not separately state mechanical incompatibility.

If you own a pair and only one handle and tray arrive, call back and ask whether the claim was logged as a pair or as a single dumbbell. The remedy is per dumbbell.
What the replacement is like
This is the part the recall notices do not cover, and it is the reason this page exists.
On the one replacement set received here so far, the new handle takes noticeably more force to turn than the original did. Selecting a weight on the original was a one-handed motion. On the replacement it sometimes takes two hands.
One adult in this household stopped using the pair because of it.
It has eased somewhat with use. Not back to the original, but less stiff than it was out of the box.
Whether that comes from the handle, from the tray, or from both is not something this page can tell you. The parts arrive together and, on the set used here, were only used together, so there is no way to isolate it from outside.
This is one replacement set. It is not a test of every replacement and should not be read as one. A second handle and tray are on the way. This page will say whether the same thing holds on that one, including if it does not.
What this site would do
If your serial is in range, file the claim. It is free, and the hazard on the notice is a plate leaving the handle mid-rep. Go in expecting a stiffer adjustment rather than a like-for-like replacement.
If you are buying a FitRx XL used, read the tray serial before money changes hands. A unit in the recalled range is not unusable, but the remedy changes how the dumbbell operates, and the seller may already have been through it. Ask.
If you are buying new, the recalled XL serials were sold on Walmart.com between September 2023 and June 2024. A unit bought new now is very likely outside that range. The recall is a reason to check a serial, not a reason to rule the model out.
If grip strength matters for anyone who will use the pair, try the adjustment before you commit. That is the practical finding here, and it is not in either notice.
The alternative in the same weight class is the Bowflex SelectTech 1090, also in this site’s owned setup, with no CPSC recall found. That is a preference, not a safety verdict.
